Start with the correct drawing revision

A 2D drawing defines dimensions, tolerances, surface finish and machining notes. A 3D file helps the supplier understand geometry, fixturing direction and machining sequence. If the design is still changing, the current revision should be clear.

2D and 3D files serve different purposes

The 2D drawing should remain the primary source for tolerances, surface finish, datums and acceptance criteria. STEP or another 3D file helps clarify full geometry, interference and machining direction. If they differ, identify the governing revision before quotation.

Material, quantity and schedule affect planning

Not every dimension needs the strictest control. When functional faces, fitting holes, concentricity, flatness or assembly relationships are identified early, inspection can focus on the features that affect performance.
