When a part involves assembly faces, hole positions, concentricity or geometric relationships, completion alone is not enough. CMM measurement turns specified dimensions into records shared by engineering, purchasing and quality teams.
Reports should focus on critical features
A CMM does not need to inspect every dimension. The practical approach is to define which features affect function or assembly, then focus the report on those dimensions.
- Hole position and spacing
- Concentricity and perpendicularity
- Flatness and datum faces
- Important fitting dimensions
What a usable report should contain
Depending on project requirements, a report can include part number, drawing revision, measurement date, feature name, nominal value, tolerance limits, measured result and disposition. These fields give acceptance and repeat orders a common reference.
Read results with the datum setup and measurement conditions
A CMM result is not a stand-alone number. Part location, datum alignment, probe access, repeatable fixturing and the measurement environment can influence the result. Before quotation or acceptance, both parties should align on the drawing revision, datum scheme and decision method used for the report.
A CMM is not the right method for every feature
CMM inspection is effective for geometric relationships and accessible features. Very small bores, flexible thin walls, unusual surfaces or areas that cannot be located repeatably may require vision measurement, dedicated gauges or another method. The inspection method should be aligned with acceptance criteria before production.
Measurement data supports future lots
For prototypes and low-volume parts, the first measurement record can guide later revisions or repeat builds. When a part needs stable repeatability, these records help process adjustment.
When should an RFQ request a CMM report?
Request a CMM report during quotation when the part has critical hole locations, datum relationships, assembly faces or a first-piece record requirement. Define the features to record, inspection quantity and report timing. For straightforward non-critical dimensions, calipers, micrometers, vision measurement or dedicated gauges may be more practical; the feature and acceptance risk should determine the method.
