An inspection report is more than a pass/fail result

For precision CNC parts, a simple PASS result is often insufficient. Engineers and buyers need to know whether the results correspond to the correct drawing revision, datum structure and critical dimensions. Different datum or alignment methods can produce different results even when the same part is measured. ISO 1101 provides the foundation for interpreting geometrical specifications covering form, orientation, location and run-out, so GD&T requirements must be reviewed together with their datum references rather than as isolated tolerance values.

Six items to include in a measurement report

The report should give engineering, purchasing and quality teams a common acceptance reference. When a result is close to a tolerance limit, the acceptance rule should also be agreed. ISO 14253-1 addresses conformity decisions while considering measurement uncertainty.

  • Nominal dimensions and tolerance limits
  • Actual measured values and deviations
  • Pass or fail result
  • Inspection equipment and measurement method
  • Sampling quantity and identified critical dimensions

When should CMM or Keyence inspection be used?

CMM inspection is well suited to position, concentricity, flatness and three-dimensional relationships between multiple features. Keyence optical measurement is useful for small dimensions, hole diameters, edges and two-dimensional profiles, especially when many dimensions must be checked repeatedly. Neither method replaces the other; the right choice depends on part geometry, tolerance requirements and feature accessibility.

What should be confirmed during the RFQ stage?

Confirming acceptance requirements before production reduces disputes caused by different interpretations of tolerances, datums or inspection methods. Items that remain open can be marked for review during quotation.
